[Editorial] 7 Valentine's Day films for the horror lover in your life

Valentine’s Day is here, and we’re in the mood for love. Whether you’ll be painting the town red on a lavish dinner date or cuddling up under candlelight at home, there’s the perfect film streaming right now to cap off a romantic evening with your lover, partner, spouse, or pals.

Here at Ghouls, we’re not averse to getting a little soppy with it, so we’ve rounded up seven of the most romantic horror films to spice up your Valentine’s Day, and where to stream them.

Heart Eyes (2025)

We have long thought that the rom-com genre desperately needs to meet the world of horror, and thankfully, we got exactly that last year with the release of Josh Ruben’s Heart Eyes. If you can’t decide between watching a group of young lovers be hacked to pieces or exchanging phone numbers and first dates, this is the movie for you.

Heart Eyes centres on Ally McCabe (Olivia Holt) and Jay Simmonds (Mason Gooding), who meet by chance in a coffee shop and immediately, sparks fly. After a rocky yet successful first date, the pair go home together, but inadvertently find themselves the next victims of the Heart Eyes Killer, who struck fear into the hearts of those in the city one year prior on Valentine’s Day.

In the UK, you can stream Heart Eyes on Sky, NOW TV, and Paramount+. In the US, you can stream Heart Eyes on Netflix.

My Bloody Valentine (1981)

When you think of Valentine’s Day horror films, your mind likely immediately casts to the iconic slasher My Bloody Valentine. And there’s plenty to choose from, including a 2009 remake and an upcoming reboot from Blumhouse.

Released in 1981, My Bloody Valentine takes place 20 years after a tragic mine collapse caused the death of five men and put a sixth, Harry Warden, into a coma. Driven mad, he later murdered the supervisors who caused the accident and vowed never to let the town celebrate Valentine’s Day again. Two decades later, as the teens of the town ignore his warning, he embarks on a new killing spree.

In the UK, you can rent My Bloody Valentine on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and the Sky Store. In the US, you can stream My Bloody Valentine on Kanopy.

Together (2025)

Sometimes, you find that person that you love so much and want to be around all the time. It can feel like they almost become an extension of your own self and body, but what if that happened quite literally?

Real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie appear in Together, a body horror film that takes co-dependency to the next level. They play Tim and Millie, a couple who are years into their stagnating relationship and find themselves at a crossroads when they move from bustling city life to a remote countryside home. They soon find themselves in a nightmarish situation after spending the night in a cave when a hike in the rain goes drastically wrong. Overnight, they seem to be magnetically drawn to each other – physically, not metaphorically – as their bodies begin to meld into one.

In the UK, you can buy Together on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. In the US, you can stream Together on Hulu.

Lisa Frankenstein (2024)

Ahead of our virtual birthday party next week, including our three-way podcast recording with Not Another Teen Podcast and the Tainted Love podcast, watch Lisa Frankenstein before we deep dive into the coming-of-age zom-rom-com.

Starring Kathryn Newton, Cole Sprouse, Liza Soberano, Henry Eikenberry, Joe Chrest, and Carla Gugino, the teen flick follows the titular Lisa Swallows (Newton) as she struggles with grieving the loss of her mother as well as her place in her father’s new marriage and family unit. One night, when she visits the cemetery she often frequents, a lightning bolt strikes the grave of a pianist who was killed by a lightning strike back in the 1800s. She develops a relationship with the corpse (Sprouse), finding friendship, love, and missing body parts.

In the UK, you can stream Lisa Frankenstein on Netflix. In the US, you can rent Lisa Frankenstein on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango At Home, and Spectrum On Demand.

Bones and All (2022)

Nothing says romance quite like devouring your lover whole – quite literally. Timothee Chalamet may be better known for his romantic role in Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name (2017), but he has us staring wistfully at our screens alongside Taylor Russell in the director’s follow-up film, Bones and All.

Released in 2022, Bones and All begins with Maren (Russell) being abandoned by her father as she turns 18, learning that she has harboured cannibalistic tendencies her entire life. She sets about tracking down her estranged mother, meeting fellow “eater” Sully (Mark Rylance) and Lee (Chalamet) along the way, with romance blossoming with the latter.

In the UK, you can stream Bones and All on BBC iPlayer and Amazon Prime Video. In the US, you can stream Bones and All on Netflix.

Bride of Chucky (1988)

It’s so rare for a sequel to be as iconic as its predecessor, but Bride of Chucky is as beloved among many genre fans as Child’s Play. And much of that comes down to its tone shift from straight horror to a self-referential comedy as well as the central relationship between the titular murderous doll (voiced by Brad Dourif) and his lover, Tiffany Valentine (Jennifer Tilly).

As the fourth movie in the franchise, Bride of Chucky departs from the storyline of its predecessors, focusing mostly on Chucky and Tiff’s relationship after her soul is transferred to a doll. The film sees the duo attempt to find a magical amulet to restore them to their human bodies, arranging to be driven by Jesse (Nick Stabile) and Jade (Katherine Heigl), who are unaware that their cargo is alive.

In the UK, you can rent Bride of Chucky on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, the Sky Store, and Rakuten TV. In the US, you can rent Bride of Chucky on Amazon Prime Video, the Sky Store, and Fandango At Home.

Nekromantik (1987)

It may not exactly be Romeo and Juliet, but Nekromantik boasts a romance for the ages that will leave your stomach turning. Though if you’re enjoying a first date this Valentine’s Day, maybe don’t opt for this one.

The notorious banned film follows troubled street cleaner Robert Schmadtke (Bernd Daktari Lorenz), who begins to explore his interest in necrophilia alongside his wife Betty (Beatrice Manowski). One day, he brings home a corpse for his wife, but it soon becomes apparent she prefers the corpse to her husband.

In the UK, you can stream Nekromantik on Arrow Player. In the US, you can stream Nekromantik on Arrow Player, Shudder, AMC+, Night Flight Plus, and Philo.
