[Editorial] Films To Ruin Your Day: Vomiting & Genital Mutilation

You’re back for more? I would have thought the first few extreme horror films already ruined your day but clearly you’re a little perverted and want to continue ruining your days, which is something I can wholeheartedly support.

I am more than certain there is a specific psychology behind having an intrigue to watching movies that really push our personal boundaries, however, without the exact sciences written down on paper it’s often hard to justify why we do this to ourselves and watch these horrific films.

Last time we explored some of the nastiness, ones that even I have struggled to sit through including Men Behind The Sun and Tumbling Doll of Flesh. Perhaps this time we’re not going quite as tortuous but we’re not easing up in any sense of the matter, and instead seeing how well you can handle genital mutilation, bodily fluids and sustained torture of the human body and the mind.

August Underground

My favourite past time is mentioning this film to people, and having them just go white from sheer horror at the thought of even watching this. Yes it is a faux snuff film about people that get tortured in their basement, and yes it’s not only difficult to watch because of subject matter but also because it’s basically filmed on a potato for that realism look. Fred Vogel’s 2001 exploitation film depicts two pals who just go around messing around and then casually torturing people in their basement for the lols.

The first time I watched this I found it hilarious, but the second time I watched it the sinister side came through some more for me. There’s a body dismemberment scene in a bathroom that hands down is rough as fuck, but you have to give credit for the special effects on that one. If you’re brave enough to sit through this one then you can continue to have a bad day but going on and watching the other two in the trilogy too.

Slaughtered Vomit Dolls

Just the title alone is enough to put the majority of people off, and in some ways I would say stop there. Putting this down as a ‘recommendation’ goes against my own morals, but here we are. I’m going to go out on a limb with this one and say, perhaps don’t eat anything before attempting this one… I made the mistake of accidentally consuming gone-off milk, being really unwell and then proceeding to watch a film where most of it is vomiting.

Lucifer Valentine’s Slaughtered Vomit Dolls is absolutely fucking gruelling. The late Amera Lavey features as Angela, a young drug-addicted prostitute who gets horrifically abused and throws up a lot. Valentine created this ‘vomit gore’ genre and I have to say I hate it. What makes the film even worse to stomach (I’m so sorry for this pun) is that there’s some damn nasty rumours about treatment of cast, and Amera Lavey was sadly murdered (in an unrelated to the film case) after starring in a few of the films.

Aftermath

Necrophilia is definitely one of those taboos that gets us all a bit riled up because it’s just so fucking bizarre and disgusting. And if you really want to get immersed in that world and see if full on happening then Nacho Cerda’s short extreme horror film from 1994, Aftermath: Genesis, is where you should start. A mortician shows that he is in exactly the line of work that allows him to indulge a little at the end of a hard working day, because he loves to fuck dead bodies and has a full slab of them just ready and waiting at his disposal.

Yes you get to see the necrophilia happen in brutal and graphic depiction, and watching it never seems to get easier. With no spoken dialogue, Aftermath feels like an endurance test of how long you can watch a man fuck dead bodies until you tap out. Even though it really does make you watch with an unflinching perspective, in some ways it is kind of beautiful and well-shot which at least stops it from feeling like a grimy dark web video you’ve stumbled on.

Martyrs

Martyrs-2008.jpg

This is one of those more well-known extreme films because it’s a little more fancy and comes from the New French Extremity wave of films that have a certain allure over your straight up extreme films. However, that doesn’t mean watching this is a walk in the park at all. Anyone that has seen Martyrs can agree that it’s fucking harrowing to sit through, because it deals not only with violence, torture and gore but because it’s also psychological in its approach to those elements, which makes it even worse.

In 2008 Pascal Laugier decided to ruin not just the audience’s day but their entire fucking year with this heart breaking film. There is child abuse, a whole family gets slaughtered, a gut-wrenching suicide, and some of the most disturbing and sustained torture shown on screen. This is a mean film that doesn’t ever offer a glimpse of hope for anyone, so you basically just come away feeling like pure shit for days. But it is a masterpiece.

Antichrist

Lars Von Trier is a really contentious director, and receives a lot of hate for the films he produces which I totally get but in some ways that just makes me love his work even more. Antichrist from 2009 is an exceptionally powerful and highlighting extreme film that has so much more to say than the reputation it has. A grieving couple, She and He, played beautifully by Charlotte Gainsbourg and William Dafoe, isolate themselves in the woods so He, a psychologist, can treat She as she desperately battles grief and guilt over the loss of their infant son.

There is female and male genital mutilation in this which is what the film has earned its reputation for and understandably so - I found it difficult to watch She snip her clit off with a pair of scissors… And even though Antichrist is a tough watch, it is emotional and human in its approach to the grieving process and dealing with feelings of self persecution. It certainly won’t appeal to many with hardcore sex scenes, child deaths and those gruesome gore scenes but the aesthetics are stunning, the score mesmerising and the message hauntingly real.
