[Editorial] Hearts of Darkness: February’s Love Letters to Horror…

February marks the month of love with Valentine’s Day taking place on the 14th for those who choose to celebrate it. Here at Ghouls, we have decided to turn our gaze towards the females of the genre in a celebratory collection of essays.

Unfortunately, the talent and contributions of too many women are often overlooked or erased from history as they stand in the shadows unrecognised. The aim of the Hearts of Darkness series is to shout loud and proud about the actresses, writers, characters and creatives who have paved the way for all of us in too many ways to count.

My original idea was to write just one piece about a woman in horror who has been a particular inspiration to me but then I thought, why not expand this to an entire series and bring as many voices together as we can to champion those who help heal, uplift and empower us? And so, what started as a futile solo effort has now become a beautiful ensemble.

I knew when we put out a call for submissions that the response would be amazing but I wasn’t prepared for just how personal and touching the essays were and the emotional impact they would have upon me.  It was a privilege to read how we all connect and identify with the women of horror. However, it was also equally disappointing to receive accounts of women whose achievements have been silenced for far too long. I hope this series goes some way towards rectifying that.

With that said, I would like to invite you to join us this month as we open our Hearts of Darkness and share our love letters to the women in horror.

Good vibes only
